Wärtsilä Hybrid Upgrade Solution To Enhance Efficiency & Sustainability For Offshore Vessel

For the engineering, supply and commission of a hybrid propulsion system for an offshore sector vessel, Wärtsilä has been selected. Wärtsilä has been given the contract by Norway-based Eidesvik AS to carry out the upgradation project on its ‘Viking Neptun’ construction vessel. In August 2019 the order was placed. Two similar hybrid upgrade contracts have been placed with Wärtsilä in recent months.

In 2015, the 15,900 DWT ‘Viking Neptun’ was built. Wärtsilä engines and Wärtsila’s Low Loss Concept (LLC) electrical systems are fitted in this. While the dynamic positioning operations are performed the ship will now with Wärtsilä’s battery hybrid solution, be able to operate on a single generator set together with batteries. Integrating the new system with the already existing Wärtsilä control system will make it seamless.

This hybrid solutions will give benefits like fuel cost saving and better environmental performance to its customers. It was also reduce the maintenance costs as the load on the engines will be more efficient and the running hours will also be reduced.

“Wärtsilä continues to lead the industry’s technological transformation into a new era of greater efficiency and more sustainable operations. Our hybrid solutions are well established and proven, and this latest project order is a further endorsement of our competences in this field,” says Cato Esperø, Head of Sales, Service Unit Nordics and Baltics, Wärtsilä Marine.

“It is very important to our company that we play our part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, which is why we give a high level of priority to sustainable operations for our fleet. We have worked closely with Wärtsilä for many years and we were comfortable with again selecting them for this hybrid upgrade project,” says Vice President, Technology & Development, Vermund Hjelland, Eidesvik AS.

Two 870 kWh battery packs and two 2.7 MW drives are also included in the Wärtsilä scope for the hybrid system pre-installed in containers. The existing switchboard, the integrated automation and power management systems will also be upgraded by Wärtsilä. Within six months it is expected that the project will be completed.

BIMCO Submits Proposal To IMO Pointing To Ships’ Power As A Mean To Curb Emissions

A proposal for the regulation of propulsion power of ships has been submitted by BIMCO to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This has been done in order to maintain the GHG savings that has been achieved by means of slowing down the steaming.

The CO2 emission is basically dependent on the speed of the ship. However, there are other views also on which is the best regulatory measure that should be enforced to achieve the objective of emission reduction.

The ship’s speed cannot be measured accurately and thus other ways are to be looked for. The other option that they have come up with is the limiting of the propulsion power of the ships. This can be done accurately and it also has a close connection with the speed of the ship.

“While it is imperative to ensure the GHG emissions savings through slower steaming are sustained, it is also important that owners are incentivised to innovate,” says Lars Robert Pedersen, BIMCO Deputy Secretary General.

Japan has suggested that a limit for ships’ power can be set. BIMCO suggested that for each shipping sector the power limit can be derived. This will be based on an average ship’ assumed performance at the present average trading speed within every sector.

At the International meeting that will be held at IMO in London on 11-15th October, the proposal will be discussed.

LUKOIL’s New 40 BN Cylinder Oil Prevents Deposit Build-Up By Extra Detergency For 2020 Fuels

Customers were invited to a Technical Seminar in Athens by last month by LUKOIL Marine Lubricants. In this seminar they talked about the changing engine lubrication that the the shipping industry is going through because of the 2020 legislative changes and goals.

The Technical and Marketing Director of LUKOIL Marine, Stefan Claussen addressed the guest and talked about the uncertainties of the shipping fuel after 2020. He also discussed about the solutions of cylinder lubrication in the future majorly for very low and ulta low suphur fuel oils.

Claussen said, “It is expected that the vast majority of all vessels with MAN B&W engines will experience a trouble-free transition to max. 0.50%S fuels. We recommend beginning with 40 BN cylinder oil and evaluating the condition continuously.” According to Claussen, “the challenge is to create a sufficient level of detergency to avoid deposits in the engine”.

Kenny Park, Technical and Marketing Manager at LUKOIL Marine Lubricants explained: “Similar to 2012, when we launched our BN100 cylinder oil NAVIGO 100 MCL as a pre-emptive countermeasure against cold corrosion, we have already been anticipating in advance that with cylinder oil for all fuels up to 0.5%S the crucial factor will be cleaning capability rather than neutralization.”

“No 40 BN cylinder oil designed for pre-2020 low-sulphur residual fuels was covering distillate fuel operation sufficiently to handle 0.1%S and any 0.5%S fuels”, added Claussen, “So, we acquired major engine designers’ full Non-Objection Letters for our new extra-detergency BN40 cylinder oil NAVIGO MCL Extra on the basis of a successful field test in 2014 to 2017. Since then, we have been experiencing its excellent cleaning performance e.g. on engines running long-term on low sulphur fuel between Brazil and northern European ports.”

For distillate, ULSFO, VLSFO and low Sulphur heavy fuel oil (<1.5%S) application, the NAVIGO MCL Extra is a new 40 BN marine cylinder oil. Launched by LUKOIL Marine Lubricants in May 2017, it is approved for MAN, WinGD and J-ENG (Mitsubishi) engines.

“We developed NAVIGO MCL Extra in order offer our customers the best possible lubricant solutions in the years leading up to 2020 and beyond. Regardless of whether de-sulphurisation, MGO or distillate blends or any predominantly hydrocarbon blend with a maximum of 0.5% sulphur content or a 0.1%S limit in ECA – We are ready.”, says Claussen.
