Norden Enters New Biofuel Collaboration

NORDEN has collaborated with the Danish-based Kvasir Technologies, a company of the Technical University of Denmark that has a patented technology for the production of fuel using plant material.

“At NORDEN, we want to drive the shipping industry towards a cleaner future. If we are to truly make a difference, testing fuel alternatives is the right starting point”, says Henrik Røjel, Fuel Efficiency and Decarbonisation Manager at NORDEN.

“The collaboration with Kvasir is highly welcomed, both as part of our aim to be a front runner in the decarbonisation agenda and because companies thinking outside the box is a necessity in the process of finding the solutions of tomorrow”.

Utilising a new method

The main focus of Kvasir Technologies is to transform lignin which is a part of biomass and then use it for the production of fuel. Usually, lignin is seen as a waste and thrown away without being used. However, it is available and found in large quantities thereby, enabling a high degree of scalability in comparison to other feedstocks.

Biomass can be converted into liquid fuels in various ways. The technology of Kvasir is different from other technologies because it is not only capable of converting cellulose but also lignin into a liquid biofuel product.

“This project will demonstrate the suitability of our biofuel as bunkers and further accelerate the technological development,” says Joachim Bachmann Nielsen, CEO at Kvasir Technologies.

“NORDEN wants to be a front runner in this phase of experimentation and help gather intelligence that will hopefully make a positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions and help the industry reach the ambitious goal for 2050 set by the International Maritime Organisation,” adds Henrik Røjel. “In the effort to be a front runner, NORDEN is assisting in the testing and development of biofuel on owned vessels while working on making biofuel a standard on the company’s long-term chartered vessels.”

A fully backed collaboration

In the later stage of the 3.5 year collaboration, the fuel of Kvasir will undergo a full scale test on one the vessels of Norden. The aim is to get better knowledge about the features of the biofuel and prove its suitability for use in future. The insights about the handling of vessels and the properties that the fuel should have for it to be viable and a functioning choice will be shared by NORDEN.

The partnership between NORDEN and Kvasir Technologies is a part of ShippingLab that is a joint industry initiative that aims for the development of Danish competences in the areas of digitalization, autonomous shipping and eco-friendly technology. Innovation Fund Denmark, the Danish Maritime Fund, Orient’s Fund and Lauritzen Fonden support the ShippingLab.

“Denmark is rightfully perceived as a leading nation within shipping and development of green technologies, and the collaboration between NORDEN and Kvasir Technologies is an excellent example of this, which we are very happy to support”, says Magnus Gary, Project Director at ShippingLab.
