‘Coalition for Maritime Environmental and Energy Transition’ has been joined by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore as a Founding Partner.
Ms. Elisabeth Borne, the French Minister for Environmental and Solidarity Transition was also present at the signing ceremony that was held at the Assises de l’Economie de la Mer which is an annual gathering for the French maritime community on the 3rd and 4th of December in Montpellier.
The French Maritime Cluster developed Coalition aims to describe a “2050 vision for maritime environmental and energy transition” and to recognize the measures that will help meet the GHG goals that have been set by the Paris Accords and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The first one to support the initiative was Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore. It was followed by another 22 industry stakeholders who joined the Coalition.
Matthieu de Tugny, President Marine & Offshore at Bureau Veritas, commented: “The transition to cleaner and low carbon energy is a global requirement and the leadership taken by the French cluster reflects this need: both in the technology being developed for global markets and the initiatives of shipowners.”
The biggest LNG fuelled ships in the world are being built by CMA CGM. In the nine ships that have been ordered, GTT’s Mark III Flex containment systems will be installed. Commenting on this, Matthieu de Tugny said, ”We are seeing new models for ship design and ship operations and as a classification society we are highly focused on helping the industry respond to the challenge of change.”
The shipping industry is growing at a fast pace due to the digitalization of economy and the growing awareness about environment. These are two major areas where Bureau Veritas has to develop.
The membership of Bureau Veritas to the Coalition will make it eligible for a broader active engagement membership to a number of international initiatives like the Global Industry Alliance (IMO) and the International Windship Association (IWSA).
