Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has joined hand with Oki Electric Industry Co.Ltd. (OKI) in order launch a joint study the OKI’s new bird’s eye view monitoring system, ‘FlyingView’, in order to have a 360° view around a tugboard to monitor it. The system was installed on the tugboat Asaka Maru that is owned by Nihon Tug-Boat Co.Ltd. as step to prepare for the study and to carry out the preliminary experiment.
A small part of the hull of the vessel is visible form the tug’s bridge when a tugboat is moving towards a vessel for help. In this case, the tugboat has to depend on the instructions that they receive from the pilot on board of the particular vessel through radio.
To perform the experiment, four fish-eye cameras were set on the mast and in order to help the captain to see what the conditions around the tug boat look like in real-time, a digital composting system and display were put up in the bridge.
This helps the operator of the tugboat to see the surrounding situation of the tugboat. The boat will also be able to get it’s distance from the obstacles around it and the other vessels that are present. The reduces the risk of an accidental contact with the target vessel and thereby, helps in efficient assistance for the safe berthing and unberthing.
The position navigation support system of MOL has image recognition like the AR Navigation System which is being practically used already, as a part of the challenge project which is called the ‘Focus Eye’ series, that aims to develop technologies that will contribute to the world leading level of safe operations of the company. It focused on OKI’s ‘FlyingView’ system as a part of the series, with the aim of fastening it’s initiatives for the betterment of safe operations through the development of systems jointly which also includes a study on ways by which it can be used on large vessels.
