A strategic collaboration that will help in fastening the process of reducing GHG in the shipping sector has been established by Cargill, Maersk Tankers and Mitsui & Co. The three parties see that this global issue requires urgent steps and this they are working continuously to reduce this in their respective lines of business. In order to speed up this work they have joined hands and thereby take the maritime sector to a more sustainable future.
The joint force of these companies will work towards the reduction of emissions of GHG by exploiting the available fuel saving technology and by innovative and exploring new technical solutions. They aim to prove that by making vessels more fuel efficient by coming together they can have economic benefit thereby show casing that sustainable shipping can be commercially viable.
This collaboration is closely aligned with the IMO’s target to cut the GHG emissions of international shipping by 50% by 2050. It also has a long term aim to provide for a ‘over-the-shelf’ solutions to the members of the maritime industry who are looking forward to explore new technologies for emission reduction.
George Wells, global head of assets and structuring at Cargill Ocean Transportation, said, “We are excited to bring together three of the largest players in their respective maritime market segments to actively make shipping more sustainable. With the right expertise, transparency and collaboration, we can make changes to vessels and contracts that will significantly reduce shipping’s GHG footprint.”
The collaboration will benefit from a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience that spans the globe. “Maersk Tankers has extensive knowledge and experience in testing a wide range of technologies that can drive fuel efficiencies. This collaboration represents an opportunity to share this knowledge with others and to deploy these technologies in a larger fleet. Through that, we can accelerate the impact on reducing GHG globally,” said Tommy Thomassen, chief technical officer at Maersk Tankers.
Access to extensive fleet and the exceptional operational experience will be provided by Cargill. The strong legacy of Maersk Tankers to implement new and innovative things on product tankers which enhance the technical performance will also be there. Mitsui & Co. will bring in its comprehensive and elaborate vessel construction and trading wisdom. All of these will help provide the shipping industry with new technologies and solutions which the collaboration of these three companies will explore jointly.
Takuya Shirai, general manager of the ship business division at Mitsui & Co., said, “The collaboration will contribute to the sustainable growth of the shipping industry, whilst promoting a more environmentally conscious society.”
The collaboration will first work on the testing and trials of the already available proven technologies on the ships that are under their control, with work that is already under construction with various owners who invest and install energy saving devices on ships under their charter. The projects will not only include the steps that are to be taken to optimize the performance of the vessels by sharing and making use of the data that come from conjunction vessels with routing but will also look towards the mechanisms that will help get the advantage of improved performance that is to be shared by owners and charterer. Along with this partnership will also explore the various new technologies than can reduce and have an impact on the emissions from the maritime industry in the long run.
