For the development of the oil and gas industry’s first methodology that will qualify the integrity of the digital Twin technology the TechnipFMC and DNV GL have entered in a partnership.
To bring forward the sectors various technical definitions and expectations to the digital twins is the main aim of this method. For the establishment of trust in the data from digital twin generation, a benchmark will set for the operators of oil and gas, supply chain partners and regulators. This helps in better performance, safety and proper decision making in various projects and operations.
Digital twins that present physical assets and their behaviour digitally have the potential to emerge out rapidly as an outline for asset design and operations across the oil and gas value chain.
Oil and gas companies are making use of technology in order to bring in asset information from various sources in a single and secure place. They also connect 3D models at the operation phase with real time field data. Operators may also get more information by using digital twins. Using this information they can stimulate the asset behaviour that depends on operational behaviour that will further help in decision making.
Digital twin technology results in quicker, better asset design, improved project delivery efficiency, and operation safety and performance during the whole asset life. As more digital twins enter the oil and gas sector, it is key for operators to know that their twin works as planned, and that its output is reliable. Our collaboration with DNV GL aims to address this, said Julie Cranga, Vice President, Subsea Digital,TechnipFMC.
On DNV GLs Recommended Practice for Technology Qualification: DNVGL-RP-A203 the new methodology will be built. For the oil and gas industry member to have a mutual framework the RP was published 20 years ago for the first time. This was done so that they get acceptance for the implementation of unproven hardware technology. Since then it has been used for the demonstration of trust of many technologies globally.
The major challenge with implementing new digital technologies in the oil and gas industry today is the same as when novel hardware technologies were introduced two decades ago. How can you trust that it works when the technology hasnt been used before? Im delighted that a team of domain and digital experts from DNV GL and TechnipFMC are collaborating to tackle a wide range of issues from definitions to data quality and algorithm performance to enable faster implementation of digital twins in our sector, said Liv A. Hovem, CEO, DNV GL Oil & Gas.
On a project that will be delivered by TechnipFMC in the early 2020, that is a project on subsea field development, will have the digital twin technology qualification methodology.
