ClassNK Advises Existing Ships To Install Ballast Water Management Systems Early

The Leading Classification Society Class NK had made an analysis of the retrofitting status Ballast Water Management Systems (BASS) on it’s ships that are registered in September 2018. They gave the confirmation that the installation deadline of many of them that are based on the Ballast Water Management Convention are mostly concentrated in 2022.

According to the lastest data, the status has been updates. However, the Society gave a confirmation that the deadlines are still concentrated in year 2022 for many of it’s registered ships.

Out of 9,097 ships registered with ClassNK, 7,124 have to be installed with BWMS according to the BWM Convention. As of the end of August 2019, installation is complete for 2,006 which leaves behind 4,518 ships.

The decrease in the number of ships without BWMS within 1 year by 882 is good but installation deadline is greatly concentrated in 2022 for these ships.

Forseeing difficulties in the installation of BWMS, CkassNK suggests the installation to be done in advance.
