India: Asian Development Bank Prepares Plan To Increase Use Of Coastal Shipping

Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, the Minister of State for Shipping (I/C) and Chemical & Fertilizers announced that Shri Mansukh Mandaviya informed that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had prepared an Action Plan for Coastal Shipping in September 2019.

Recommendations related to the creation of infrastructure needed for the increment of usage of coastal shipping in India is included in the action plan.

The Minister also informed that the Master Planning of 12 Major Ports has been done and the identification of 95 capacity expansion and projects related to modernization of ports has been done.

According to the global benchmarks relating to berthing policy 2016, the capacity of the major ports have been re-rated and following re-rating, there is a raise of 293 MTPA in the effective capacity. For the betterment in the efficiency and productivity of major ports, global standards have been adopted and 116 initiatives have been recognized to unlock the capacity of 100 MTPA at major ports.

67 projects that come under SagarmalaProgramme has been approved by the Ministry of Shipping for Rs. 1,491 Crore financial help for the improvement of infrastructure and connectivity of the ports.

He also mentioned that a study of the entire nations end to end logistics flows was done for all the major commodities at port on the basis of which the National Perspective Plan (NPP) for the SagarmalaProgramme was made in April 2016. As a part of the NPP, a path has also been made to increase the capacity of Indian Port to 3300+ MTPA by 2025.
