DNV GL Awards HHI World’s First AiP For Cyber Secure Class Notation On LPG Carriers

The First Approval in Principle for the Cyber Secured (Advanced) class notation on carriers of LNG has been awarded to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) by DNV GL.

The AIP approves that the design of the vessel is according to the DNV GL’s advanced cyber security requirements. The vessel’s design has been made jointly by Advanced Research Center in Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE).

“Cybersecurity is now an essential part of safe ship design and operation,” commented Jarle Coll Blomhoff, Head of Cyber Security at DNV GL.

“We congratulate HHI on successfully building cyber security into their innovative LPG carrier design and encourage more shipyards to protect their newbuildings in the same way,” he added.

The cyber security design of HHI is based on the LPG carrier that is presently under construction. The verification has been given after the assessment of the ship’s propulsion, steering, navigation, power generation, control, and other essential systems in line with the needs of DNV GL’s Cyber Secure (Advanced) notation.

There are various qualifiers of the Cyber Secure notations of DNV GL which are based on the scope of the system and the target level of security. Thus, using this, it is applicable to both the ships that are being built newly and those already in operation, from the types ranging from merchant ships to advanced offshore, cruise and navy vessels. On the basis of the IMO’s upcoming security resolution, the qualifiers are made and also expands the cyber resilience of the vessel by imposing more of cyber security measures onboard.
