Measures that will reduce the speed or power of ships was proposed by France a few months ago and has been recently proposed by the BIMCO (Baltic and International Maritime Conference), which is the oldest and largest maritime association in the world, to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The Louis Dreyfus Amateurs Group, that is aware of the pollutants that are emitted and wants to reduce them has welcomes this step towards sustainable shipping.
“Indeed, our group has been at the forefront of environmental issues for many years: with the first double-hull bulk carriers in the world, with the first electric battery installations on ships dedicated to offshore wind, or with the research initiated on sailing assistance to the propulsion of ships”, says Philippe Louis Dreyfus.
Philippe Louis-Dreyfus has been working actively to promote responsible and exemplary shipping, especially when he chaired the ECSA (European Shipowners’ Association) and BIMCO. The measure to reduce the ship’s speed was first proposed by him. This decreases the emission of all air pollutants in a large scale and that too without investment.
He also said that the step to reduce the speed or power of ships was just the beginning which will help the decarbonisation of the shipping activities. However, the steps will an important start that will showcase the will of the shipping industry to make things eco-friendly and will help become a driving force on environmental issues that is very important today.
He also congratulated their team on the eminent role that France has decided to play to promote this measure in the last G7 through the voice of the President of the Republic, Mr. Emmanuel Macron. He also thanked the teams that were led by the Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, Mrs. Elisabeth Borne.
“We are calling today on the IMO to welcome this measure. Now that the industry is ready to take an important step immediately, it is not conceivable that IMO will not act in this direction. The European Commission and many governments are very attentive to this today”, says Philippe Louis Dreyfus.
