Global Authorities To Discuss How To Raise The Bar For Enforcement Of 2020 Sulphur Cap

The 2020 sulphur cap is a great challenge for the maritime industry. The joint effort of Danish Maritime Authority and the World Maritime University will bring the administration together so as to share knowledge relating to the sulphur enforcement in particular regions.

A new global sulphur limit according to which the ship fuel must not have sulphur content more than 0.5 percent will be put into force from the 1st of January, 2020.

To make sure that benefits of the new regulation has a complete effect, it is necessary that the new regulations are put into force properly by all national administration. This is also important to maintain a fair competition and thereby a level of playing in the industry.

Three international workshops will be conducted in Myanmar, Kenya and Trinidad & Tobago by the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) and the World Maritime University (WMU). Representatives from the respective regions will be invited in these workshops and discussions relating to the issues of the global sulphur limit enforcement will done. Some examples are the legal basis, fuel samples, document checks, targeting mechanisms, remote sensing and use of sniffers, training of inspectors and sanctions.

These workshops will help these regions to get experience about the reduction in sulphur limit in ship fuel enforcement. It aims to improve that consistency and quality of inspection of sulphur and also discuss the present and future tools for the proper enforcement.

The Danish Maritime Fund is supporting this project. The Danish Ministry of Environment and Food is also making contributions for the project. It will take place from January to May 2020.
