AIDA Cruises Lays Keel For Second LNG-Powered Cruise Ship ‘AIDAcosma’

At the Neptun Werft shipyard, Rostock the first building block for the LNG powered cruise ship was laid on the 15th of October, 2019. The traditional coin was placed by Charleen Hoffman (AIDA Cruise) and Kenny Schaft (Meyer Werft shipyard), two trainees, under the first of the total 90 blocks.

The ship will be named as AIDAcosma and it’s first journey will be from Kiel to the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic Sea from the summer of 2021.

AIDA President Felix Eichhorn welcomed Tim Meyer the Managing Director of the Meyer Werft shipyard and the head of the Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock Manfred Ossevorth. Along with them were many other guests from the world of politics and business which included Birgit Hesse, President of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament, Rostock’s Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen, and the President of Rostock’s municipal assembly Regine Lück.

Harry Glawe, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Minister for Economics, Construction and Tourism talked about how important a location on Warnow was for maritime. He also praised the great commitment of AIDA.

AIDA President Felix Eichhorn: “With AIDAcosma we are consistently continuing our sustainable growth. The keel-laying of our second LNG-powered cruise ship here in Rostock is also an expression of our company’s economic and innovative power in Rostock and throughout northern Germany.” In 2018 AIDA Cruises alone contributed over 1.6 billion Euros to northern Germany’s economic growth. The company’s economic performance in Rostock alone (exclusive of ship-building) amounted to around 160 million Euros according to a study carried out by Deloitte & Touche in conjunction with the Universities of Hamburg and Genoa. “AIDA stands for some 8,200 direct and indirect jobs with our suppliers here in the north. With our investments in the development and use of sustainable technologies, we are providing key momentum for research and science clusters throughout Germany,” Felix Eichhorn added.

With the investment of more than two billion Euros in Germany by 2023 along with the building of AIDAcosma and a third cruise ship that will be powered by LNG, the company will further generate jobs in ship building and the maritime supply industry.

AIDAcosma will have a gross tonnage of 183,900, length of 337 metres, 20 decks and space for 2,600 staterooms. The ship will have a new feature that is the Fun Park at the stern of the ship which will have a pool for children, a twin water chute and the water slide. The Sport Deck will have a boulder wall for the 1st time. The Pool Deck will be the width of the ship.

The three tiered Sun Decks give a lot of space under the Sun. It also has 17 restaurants and 23 bars. The interiors will be in soft cream and sand shades will give a great vacation feels. It also will have a specialty restaurant Mamma Mia which will serve home made pasta and Italian cuisine. The other amenities are the Theatrium, shops, a disco, a gym area, the lavish Body & Soul Organic Spa, and the clubs for tiny tots, kids and teens.

The maiden season for AIDAcosma will start in summer of 2021. It will move from Kiel on two beautiful northern routes from May to October. The ship will move to the Norwegian fjords alternate weeks and to sone cities on the Baltic Sea. The AIDAcosma will stay overnight according to the travel dates in St. Petersburg, Tallinn or Helsinki. The bookings will officially be open on the 21st of November, 2019. People can pre book a cruise from now on.
