A contract has been signed by Jan van Dam for the installation of a wind assisted population system on their 3600 DWT general cargo vessel MV Ankie that has been supplied by eConowind. A Netherlands based company Spijk is to take the delivery in Q4 2019 of the Ventifoil system.
It is eConowind BVs, first commercial order that completed its sea test trial successfully this year.
The development of the wind-assist system that has been going on for the past three years was backed by EU grand. This will make the companys mark in the shipping industry which is eagerly moving towards decarbonization.

The modular Ventifoil units are in the form of the non-rotating wing with vents and an internal fan that use boundary layer suction for maximum effect. For the reduction of motor power and energy, it has two,10 meter wings with two extensions of six meters that generates a great amount of force.

In this not only the practical use of wind assisted systems in the day to day operations but also the actual savings over a period of time will be studied from October.
It is expected by both eConowind and Van Dam Shipping that the Ventifoils will give significant savings making it a solution that will help shipping industry reach the IMO decarbonization goals for 2030 and 2050.
