IMO has been consistently contributing to the fight against climate change. It is giving support and contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 that says ‘to take urgent action to combat climate change and it’s impacts’.
In order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from international shipping, IMO has brought forward some mandatory steps under the IMO’s pollution prevention treaty. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) which is necessary for new ships and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEM) are some of the mandatory measures.
An initial IMO strategy was taken up by IMO in 2018 to reduce the emission of GHG from vessels. This brought forward IMO’s commitment to the global community for the reduction of GHG emissions from international shipping and removing it completely as soon as possible.
To support the member States, IMO is putting into force global technical cooperation projects. It is particularly putting in more efforts in developing States in order to implement and support energy efficiency in the shipping sector.
