A key IMO initiative, the Global Industry Alliance (GIA) has set to be extended to 2023 which is supporting ship decarbonization, in line with the deadline of IMO’s Initial GHG Strategy. There is a good progress by the initiative in two years, whose 6th Task Force meeting took place on June 25, in Gothenberg, Sweden.
The developments in a number of on-going projects, including the upcoming release of the first of three ‘Energy Efficient Ship Operation’ e-learning courses, which will be made available free of charge were discussed in the task force. There is a progress in work on the second course, which will provide guidance to seafarers for working in engine and deck departments can contribute to reducing fuel consumption. The next will be Course whose aim is at shipping companies and ports and what they can do to contribute to energy-efficient shipping.
The agenda also included Just-in-time (JIT) ship operation, covering the topics like how to address existing contractual and operational barriers. The group discussed how the required exchange of data between ships, ports and terminal could be further incentivised – and agreed to reach out to the aviation industry to learn how, through global data sharing, the aviation industry has improved the reliability of arrival slots.
The GIA is an innovative initiative of the IMO, which is the public-private partnership and works under the framework of the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) Project aims to bring maritime industry leaders to support an energy efficient and low carbon maritime transport system together.
